December 11, 1893 letter from John N. Young in Calais, Maine, to D. M. Gardner, regarding the estate of B. Young.

Nothing written on reverse, but the paper scrap used for the letter was a form from the Custom-House, Collector's Office at Eastport, Maine.

D. M. Gardner

Please pay Estate of B. Young twenty dollars for pasturage due me and charge same to me.

• D. M. Gardner - perhaps Daniel Morgan Gardner (1834-1897)
• B. Young - possibly Benjamin Young (1813-1892)

Small Notebook Given Out by J. & A. Murray of Calais, Maine; Dress Goods

Small notebook given out as a favor by J. & A. Murray of Calais, Maine.  Importers of Cloaks, Dress Goods, Shawls and Fancy Goods; Umbrellas Re-covered and Repaired.

J. and A. Murray operated from about 1886 to 1925. The Murray brothers were natives of Glasgow, Scotland, who came to St. Stephen, New Brunswick, across the St. Croix River from Calais, Maine.  They were:

• James Murray (1855-1924)
• Alexander Purdie Murray (1858-1941)

The name Edna appears on the first page of handwriting. The item came with others from eastern Washington County, Maine, including some items that belonged to Edna Davis of Robbinston, Maine - but there's no guarantee that this notebook belonged to Edna's family.

Other possible names include: 

• Will Nash - interestingly, there was a William I. Nash (1849-1921) in nearby Robbinston, Maine
• ? Johnson - possibly Malk Johnson - who may have been Malcolm Johnson (1841-1918) of Calais, Maine
• W? Holland - Winny, Wm., ?
• E? Gove - Earn, Ern, Em?

Two cabinet photographs of unidentified women; by studios in Eastport, Maine. 

The photograph above was taken at the F E. Fairfield Studio.  The stamp on the reverse is a contemporary one that a reseller apparently used for pricing.

Bear in mind that people from nearby towns in Maine and in nearby New Brunswick, particularly the islands in Passamaquoddy Bay, would travel to Eastport, Maine, for services, so these women might not have lived in Eastport itself.

The other photograph was taken at the Loring Studio and has nothing on the reverse.

1880s Autograph Album of Lois Lawler Ricker of Eastport, Maine

1870s/1880s/1890s autograph album of Lois Lawler Ricker (1879-1967) of Eastport, Maine.

The album, approximately 5-1/8" x 3-1/8", is missing its front cover and perhaps a front end paper or two; hopefully no pages at the back of the album are missing.   The back cover and spine are present and attached to each other, but unattached to the body.

The album contains 23 pages with signatures.  Lois herself signed three pages, her sister Carrie Maud Ricker signed two, and Linnie E. Mitchell of Eastport, Maine, signed two.

Her older sister Carrie Maud Ricker signed two pages, the first in 1889,

and the second in 1892.

Lois Lawler Ricker (1879-1967), born 10 August 1879, and Carrie Maud Ricker (1877-1944), born 2 March 1877, both at Eastport, Maine, were the daughters of Eliphalet and Elizabeth "Lizzie" A. (Lawler) McCaffery Ricker, who were born at Eastport, Maine, and Campobello Island, New Brunswick, respectively.

The girls had an older sister, Mary, born about 1868.

I don't believe Lois or Carrie Maud ever married.  Lois died in 1867 at Lubec, Maine, a short hop across the bay from Eastport.  Carrie Maud had died in 1944 at Eastport.

1912 Photograph of an Outing to Bliss Island, New Brunswick, Canada; perhaps by a Group from Eastport, Maine

September 22,1912 photograph of an outing by boat past the cliffs of Bliss Island, which is located in Passamaquoddy Bay, near Deer Island and mainland St. George, New Brunswick, Canada.

Someone wrote North Perry under the photograph but crossed it out. North Perry is on the US side of Passamaquoddy Bay. Perhaps the group hailed from there or left there or the caption writer was at first mistaken.

Because of the American flag and other photographs found with this one, I believe this is a group from Eastport, Maine out for a day of sightseeing in an area of stunning views of islands, coves, beaches and whales.  

The views from boat, car and ferry are still stunning one hundred years later.

Samuel Bliss, a Loyalist from Massachusetts, was given 500 acres in the area in 1784 and operated a farm on the island.  Read more here at the lighthousefriends.com site.

CDV of Helen Hinkley Leonard and Mildred G. Leonard of Deer Island, New Brunswick, and Worcester, Massachusetts

CDV taken at the Loring studio in Eastport, Maine, of siblings Mildred G. Leonard (1877-1892) and Helen Hinkley Leonard (1885-), "Nellie", who lived a short sail across Passamaquoddy Bay from Eastport, Maine, in the village of Fairhaven on Deer Island in New Brunswick.

They were the children of Henry H. Leonard and Ella or Ellen J. (Sullivan) Leonard, who moved their family to Worcester, Massachusetts, in the early 1890s.  

Sadly, Mildred died at the age of 5 in Worcester, Massachusetts.  Nellie married Charles Lemoyne Burleigh in 1914.
