CDV of a Man IDed as Eugene C. Drisko; by the Vose studio of Machias, Maine

Reprinted, with permission, from the Heirlooms Reunited blog

Carte de Visite of a man identified on the reverse as Eugene C. Drisko; by the Vose studio of Machias, Maine.

His given name starts with "Eug" and then fades but is presumably Eugene.

Eugene married:
  1. Asenath Ingersoll Barton (1852-1876), with whom he had a daughter Mabel Drisko,
  2. Arathusa B. Smith (abt 1861-1933), with whom he had two children, a daughter Mina Eva Drisko and a son Joseph Whitney Drisko, with the latter dying in infancy.

If you have information to share on the Drisko, Farnsworth, Barton and Smith families of Washington County, Maine, please leave a comment for the benefit of other researchers.

Photograph of a Young Man IDed as Colin MacNichol, No Studio Imprint, but possibly Eastport, Maine, area

Reprinted, with permission, from the Heirlooms Reunited blog

Photograph of a young man identified on the reverse as Colin MacNichol.

The reverse mentions: "Gave to me in 1920".

No studio imprint to give an idea of locale, but it's possible he was from the MacNichol family in Washington County, Maine and Charlotte County, New Brunswick.
Possibly James Colin MacNichol (1886-1960), if he went by "Colin", at least when he was younger.  This man was born in Eastport, Maine, the son of Avery Alexander MacNichol and Margaret (O'Brien) MacNichol. This Colin would move to New York and would marry Nancy Nicholls.

Although the photograph seems to have come from a later era, another possibility for Colin might have been Colin MacNichol (abt 1848-1913), a Customs officer in Eastport, Maine.  This Colin was born in Mascarene, New Brunswick, the son of John MacNichol and Jane (McDiarmid) MacNichol.  Colin married Abby Davis about 1894.

If you have a theory as to the identity of the Colin MacNichol pictured, please leave a comment for the benefit of other researchers.

CDV of a Young Boy IDed as Sterling Fessenden at 7 Years 11 Months, Eastport, Maine

Reprinted, with permission, from the Heirlooms Reunited blog

Carte de Visite of a young boy identified on the reverse as  "Sterling Fessenden, 7 years 11 mos, Eastport, August 1883"
It's likely that Sterling was Sterling Fessenden (1875-1943), son of Nicholas Fessenden (1847-1927) and Laura Emily (Stirling or Sterling) Fessenden (1852-1935) [although her birth year looks to be 1851 in the photograph of her stone].

Sterling's paternal grandparents, Hewitt Chandler Fessenden and Mary Turner (Peterson) Fessenden were in Eastport, Maine, by 1860 where Hewitt practiced medicine.  Their son Nicholas moved to Fort Fairfield, Maine, upon his 1874 marriage to Laura Emily Stirling, a native of that town, where Sterling would be born in 1875. I imagine young Sterling's photograph was taken on a visit to his paternal grandparents.

Sterling would graduate from Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, and find his way to China, where he would run the Municipal Court in Shanghai and, if the facts are correct, lead a rather controversial life.

If you have corrections and/or information to share on the Fessenden and Stirling/Sterling families, please leave a comment for the benefit of other researchers.

Photograph of an Older Woman, possibly Mary Jane (Leighton) Wilbur (abt 1821-1899) of Pembroke, Maine

Photograph of an older woman identified on the reverse as Mary Wilbur; no studio imprint.

Reprinted, with permission, from the Heirlooms Reunited blog

I was told she is Mary Jane (Leighton) Wilbur (abt 1821-1899) of Pembroke, Maine,  wife of Josiah Wilbur (1821-1902), but hope that a reader will provide confirmation.
Mary Jane (Leighton) Wilbur was born in Pembroke, Maine, about 1821, the daughter of John Leighton and Sarah (Maker) Leighton, as shown on her death record - although in some places her birth year is given as 1826.

Mary Jane and Josiah Wilbur, who declared their intention to marry on 18 April 1844, had at least 8 children, as shown in a town record, which also shows that two sons died in 1861 and another son in 1885.

If you have family photographs of Mary Jane (Leighton) Wilbur or have come across a likeness of her in your research, please leave a comment below.

Vintage Photograph of the "Lincoln House" in Washington County, Maine; presumably the Lincoln House in Dennysville

Reprinted, with permission, from the Heirlooms Reunited blog

Photograph, dating to the late 19th or early 20th century, of a house along the water, identified as the "Lincoln House in Wash. County Me".

Presumably "The Lincoln House" built in 1787 in Dennysville, Maine, along the Dennys River, by Revolutionary War General Benjamin Lincoln (1733-1810), a native of Hingham, Massachusetts.
In the map below, the "Hansom House" is a contemporary name for the "Lincoln House".

Photographs of the Seeley, Mulholland and Dudley Families of Perry, Maine, and Eastport, Maine

Reprinted, with permission, from the Heirlooms Reunited blog

Photographs related to the Mulholland, Seeley and Dudley families of Perry, Maine, and Eastport, Maine.

I believe the real photo postcard, shown above and below, was sent from Margaret (Mulholland) Seeley (1849-1915), wife of Salathiel Davis Seeley (1845-1922) to her aunt, Mrs. Hannah Mulholland of Perry, Maine.
Another photograph shows a woman of a similar countenance, not identified except through the name of Frank Seeley of Perry, Maine. This may have been a cabinet photograph of Margaret (Mulholland) Seeley with her son's name on the reverse -  Frank Frederick Seeley (1875-1955).

A similar cabinet photograph with the name Frank Seeley on the reverse may have been Frank's father - and Margaret's husband - Salathiel Davis Seeley (1845-1922).

The following photograph of a winsome young girl was found with the three mentioned above. I believe she was Addie Villa Dudley (1903-1994), daughter of Herbert Dudley and Alphenia (Waltman) Dudley (1887-1966). Alphenia would marry the above-mentioned Frank Frederick Seeley (1875-1955) in 1913. I believe Addie would marry several times.

If you have corrections and/or information to share on any of the people mentioned above, please leave a comment for the benefit of other researchers.

Carte de Visite, purportedly of Susan (Perkins) Ricker Apt, "Geo. Perkins' sister; by a Boston studio; Native of Perry, Maine

Reprinted, with permission, from the Heirlooms Reunited blog.

Carte de Visite/CDV of an older woman identified in a more contemporary hand on the reverse as Susan Apt, the sister of George Perkins.  The image was taken at a studio at 140 Court Street in Boston, Massachusetts.

The identification appears very similar to the handwriting of Rachel Virginia (Golding) Pottle (1915-2013).
From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections requested:

There was a Susan Perkins (abt 1848-1906) with a brother George E. Perkins (abt 1855-1937), natives of Perry, Maine, and this woman did indeed marry, for her second husband, a John W. Apt (abt 1857-1927).  Her first husband was Benjamin Ricker (1844-1873).

However, this CDV seems to me to be of a woman born a generation earlier.  I'm interested to hear what readers think.  Was she the Susan Perkins described above or was she perhaps misidentified?

Photograph of Elderly Mary E. (Moore) Shaw (1823-1900) of Steuben, Maine

Reprinted, with permission, from the Heirlooms Reunited blog

Identified by a Washington County, Maine, genealogist as Mary E. (Moore) Shaw (1823-1900) of Steuben, Maine.

Mary was the daughter of Robert Moore (1762-1853) and his second wife Abiah Deane (Hall) Waite Moore (1787-1867) and the widow of Francis Robert Gould Shaw (1818-1846), who was lost at sea while master of a bark sailing to Barbados.

If losing her husband wasn't tragic enough, Mary also suffered the loss of her only child, son Robert Shaw (1845-1853) at the age of about 8, just a few years later.

As if losing her husband and only child weren't enough, Mary also outlived her parents, her sibling Charles Moore (-1849) and her older half siblings, Louisa (Moore) Ingalls (1788-1870) and Samuel Moore (1781-1880).  Loss of that magnitude is hard to fathom.

If you have information to share on the Moore and Shaw families of Downeast Maine, please leave a comment for the benefit of other researchers.

c1900 Photograph of Jimmy Raeish, "friend of Carl Ross"; by a studio in Calais, Maine

Reprinted, with permission from the Heirlooms Reunited blog

c1900 photograph of a young man identified as "Jimmy Raeish, friend of Carl Ross". The photograph was taken at the studio of H. D. McKay of Main Street, Calais, Maine.

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

James Albert Raeish (1884-1929) was born  in Auburn, New York, son of Albert Raeish and Ada (Lyon) Raeish. The 1900 Federal Census of Calais, Maine, shows that James was living there with his mother and father, who was working as an electrician.

In 1910 in Oregon, James, by then an attorney, married Melva Jane Johnson, a native of Saint John, New Brunswick.  She was the daughter of Margaret Gertrude (MacLellan) and John M. Johnson, who moved the family to Calais, after Margaret's death.

Carl Ross was presumably Carl Wilbur Ross (1883-1950), a native of St. Stephen, New Brunswick, across the St. Croix River from Calais, and son of Henry Butler Ross and Lilia Miranda (Bridges) Ross.  In 1908 in Massachusetts, Carl married Eva Celeste Fraser, also a New Brunswick native, daughter of John A. Fraser and Florence Melva (MacLellan) Fraser.  Carl and Eva then moved to Portland, Oregon.

The MacLellan connection between Melva and Eva presumably explains how James and Melva came to meet.

Melva died in 1950 in California. It appears that James married twice after that. He died in 1974 in Alameda, California.

If you have information on any of these people, please leave a comment for the benefit of other researchers.

Before 1915 Photograph of three City Marshalls at Eastport, Maine: Wilson; Mitchell; Follis

Reprinted, with permission, from the Heirlooms Reunited blog.

Before 1915 photograph of three City Marshals at Eastport, Maine: Chief William Wilson, center, and Orville Mitchell and Harry Follis.

The order shows Mitchell on the left and Follis on the right, but the man on the right appears to be older than the man on the left.  Assuming Follis was Harry Leo Follis (1880-1949), he was a decade younger than Orville Emereth Mitchell (1860-1921).  Hopefully a reader with family photographs will weigh in.

If you have information to share on any of these men, please leave a comment for the benefit of other researchers.

CDV of Daniel Kilby Pomroy (1832-1872), Native of Charlotte, Maine

Carte de Visite, CDV, of a man identified on the reverse as "Daniel Kilby Pomroy, father of Eva A. Pomroy; Grandfather of Millard F. Coffin, who was born March 31st 1881"

Daniel Kilby Pomroy (1832-abt 1872), a mariner, was born in Charlotte, Maine, the son of Benjamin L. Pomroy (1801-1874) and Lucretia Hussey (Morgan) Pomroy (1808-1873). Daniel married Margaret Gullifer of Bangor, Maine, in 1855. They had, I believe, 3 children, one of whom was the Eva A. Pomroy (abt 1860-1943) mentioned on the reverse.

Eva married George W. Coffin, and they had son Millard F. Coffin (1881-1926) born in 1881, as mentioned.  His FindaGrave memorial gives his full name as Millard Fillmore Coffin, which does seem logical.  George Coffin's middle initial appears as W in an inscription in an autograph album he presented to Eva in 1878, the year before their marriage. However, the stone that appears on his FindaGrave memorial shows George M. Coffin.
The blog Heirlooms Reunited features two autograph albums with connections to the Pomroy and Gullifer families, one that belonged to Eva A. Pomroy herself and another that belonged to Eva's maternal cousin Nellie F. Barker:
  1. Autograph Album Presented in 1878 to Eva A. Pomroy of Bangor, Maine, by Future Husband George W. Coffin   - among the many sentiments are those from members of the Pomroy, Austin and Barker families.
  2. 1880s Autograph Album of Nellie F. Barker of Bangor, Maine - which contains the sentiment, shown below, of Eva's younger sister, Lillie F. Pomroy, who would marry Edward P. Austin. Lillie and Eva were cousins to Nellie F. Barker through her mother, Frances (Gullifer) Barker, "Fanny". Among the other inscribers were members of the Austin and Barker families.

If you have information to share on any of the people mentioned above, please leave a comment.

Two Old Photographs of Dwellings at Robbinston, Maine; Johnson family & Sherman Hill Road

Early 1900s

Reprinted, with permission, from the Heirlooms Reunited blog.

Two large, old photographs of what appear to be dwellings in Robbinston, Maine, one of them belonging to the Johnson family and another on Sherman Hill Road.

A paper scrap taped to the reverse of the photograph, at top, of the Johnson farm:

Lelia Johnson (Tremble) in door Johnson Farm.  Delilah Johnson right (Robbinston)  Route 1 by store/jewelry maker on left - Machias.

Lelia had a younger sister named Delilah, but there's no one younger than the girl in the doorway.  Either the woman at right is an aunt Delilah or other relative or the person making the identifications got the sisters mixed up.

The second photograph may be older than the first one shown.  From the paper scrap taped to the reverse: "house on Sherman Hill Rd 3/4 way on right (recently burned) (8/02).

Possibly late 19th century

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

Lelia J. Johnson (1897-1990) was born at Robbinston, Maine, on 28 January 1897, daughter of Malcolm Johnson and Margaret A. (Jollotta) Johnson.  As noted in the identification on the top photograph, Lelia would marry Herman Henry Trimble (1895-1979) [not Tremble].

Lelia's younger sister  Delilah Margaret Johnson [shown as Deliah on her birth record] was born at Robbinston, Maine, on 29 November 1906.

If you have information to share on the Johnson and Trimble families or who lived at the dwelling on Sherman Hill Road, please leave a comment or contact me directly.
