I am researching my GreatGreat Grandfather, Mariner Cook b. 24 Oct 1837 in Calais. Married 9 May 1860 Esther Williams b.24 May 1837 in St Stephen. They had 6 children, before moving to Golden, Colorado. I am looking for information telling why and how they came to Colorado. I have read that Mariner sailed a freight ship "The William Demming". Where can I research ships and shipping in this area and time period 1860-1870. Thank you for any help or assistance. Laurie (Terrill) Buniger Grand Junction, Colorado
ReplyDeleteInteresting! You might contact the St. Croix Historical Society on Facebook or the genealogy reference librarian at the Calais Public Library, plus the free FamilySearch.org and the subscription services, including some of the newspaper clearinghouse sites. It would be wonderful if some letters or newspaper articles have survived to this day. As for researching shipping, you could try the Penobscot Marine Museum in Searsport or the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath. Good luck! It's always interesting to hear what motivated folks to pull up stakes; keep us posted.
